Leaders discuss measures to pressure Moscow as assaults escalate
WASHINGTON, Sept 9 — U.S. and European officials met in Washington this week to discuss coordinated sanctions against Russia, following its largest aerial attack on Ukraine since the conflict began. The talks focused on reinforcing economic measures to limit Russia’s ability to fund its military operations.
The meeting, hosted at the U.S. Treasury Department, included high-level representatives such as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the European Union’s sanctions envoy, David O’Sullivan. Officials explored additional restrictions on Russian energy exports and refining operations, aiming to reduce one of the Kremlin’s most important revenue streams.
Trump Signals “Second Phase” of Sanctions
President Donald Trump, participating via phone, indicated the U.S. could implement a “second phase” of sanctions targeting countries that continue purchasing Russian oil, including India and China. These measures would seek to discourage indirect support for Moscow by limiting foreign trade with Russia’s energy sector.
EU Prepares 19th Sanctions Package
The European Union is simultaneously preparing its 19th round of sanctions. This package is expected to target Russian banks and energy firms, further isolating Russia from international financial networks and restricting its exports. EU officials emphasized the need for close alignment with U.S. actions to maximize impact.
Recent Attacks Escalate Urgency
The urgency of the sanctions talks followed a massive Russian strike on Ukrainian infrastructure, involving over 800 drones and 13 missiles hitting more than 30 locations. The attacks caused significant casualties and disrupted critical facilities, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to call for stronger international sanctions and support.
Looking Ahead
The coordinated efforts by the U.S. and EU demonstrate a unified stance against Russia’s ongoing aggression. While the impact of the sanctions will depend on global enforcement and compliance, the meetings signal a more assertive and synchronized approach by Western powers in response to escalating attacks on Ukraine.
