Drone Disruptions Trigger Tighter Security
European leaders convened in Copenhagen this week for high-level talks overshadowed by recent drone incursions that disrupted airspace across Denmark. In the days leading up to the summit, unidentified drones forced temporary airport closures and raised concerns about hybrid warfare tactics targeting European infrastructure. Danish authorities responded by imposing a nationwide ban on civilian drone flights and reinforcing security around airports, ports, and military installations.
International Support for Denmark’s Defense
To safeguard the summit, Denmark has received assistance from several European partners, including Sweden, Germany, and France, which deployed anti-drone technology, radar systems, and additional military personnel. Officials described the event as one of the most secure gatherings in recent years, reflecting fears that the incidents may be part of a wider campaign to destabilize European nations. While speculation has pointed toward Russian involvement, no government has publicly attributed responsibility.
Leaders Eye “Drone Wall” and Collective Security
The Copenhagen summit brings together EU heads of state and members of the European Political Community, with discussions focusing on security, defense, and the war in Ukraine. Proposals under review include the creation of a “drone wall” along Europe’s eastern flank to deter further incursions, as well as expanded coordination on air defense and hybrid threat monitoring. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that the drone activity could mark “only the beginning” of new forms of pressure on Europe, urging allies to strengthen collective defenses.
