Canadian privacy officials found that TikTok does not adequately safeguard children’s personal data. They said the platform allows underage access and misuses sensitive information.
Children continue to use the app
Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children access TikTok every year. The company maintains the platform is not intended for users under 13. Investigators confirmed many minors still use it.
Data collected for targeted content
The investigation revealed that TikTok gathered sensitive information from large numbers of children. The platform then used this data for advertising and content recommendations. Officials warned that these practices could harm young users.
Company pledges stronger safeguards
TikTok announced plans to strengthen protections for Canadian users. It disputed some findings but did not clarify which conclusions it contests.
Commissioner warns of risks
Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne led the investigation with other officials. He said TikTok collects vast amounts of user data, including from minors. He warned that targeted ads and content could negatively affect children.
Mr Dufresne confirmed TikTok agreed to enhance measures against underage access. The company also promised to clarify how it manages children’s data.
TikTok responds
A spokesperson said the platform welcomed the investigation. They noted that Canadian officials accepted several proposals to improve safeguards. The spokesperson added that TikTok remains committed to transparency and privacy despite disputing parts of the report.
Global scrutiny continues
The Canadian findings add to international concern over TikTok. Governments are examining its impact on children and raising national security questions. The Chinese-owned company and Beijing deny all allegations.
In the United States, former President Donald Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Talks included a potential takeover of TikTok’s US operations by American companies.
In Europe, the European Commission ordered staff in 2023 to remove TikTok from corporate phones and devices. Officials said the step aimed to protect data and strengthen cybersecurity.
